There has never been a better time for ‘trusted by industry professionals‘ methods and treatments for hair.

Simple and standard in-salon blow dries may work for those who want a temporary change. However, if you are wanting to commit to making the big change from curly/frizzy to sleek and straight, then Keratin is definitely the way to go (especially if you straighten it every day!). The price of Keratin Treatments varies depending on the brand, the salon, and the length of your hair. So make sure you research!

Back in the day, when it first emerged, Keratin had a high concentration of formaldehyde in it.

Disclaimer: is has an odour and has been known to cause allergic reactions, so be careful.

But, after a ban on using high levels of the chemical, new brands emerged and old brands reformulated to eliminate the use of formaldehyde. The legal limit for unbound formaldehyde in Australia is 0.2 per cent, but many companies have much less than this, in their products. YAY!

How does it work?

Keratin is a protein that when applied to your hair, makes it more shiny, healthy, and smooth. This treatment is great for anyone with frizzy hair that’s dry, dull, unruly or wiry, and for those who want hair that still has volume and bounce and movement, without the frizz.

The solution washes out over a period of 3-5 months, depending on your hair and how you maintain it, so you don’t have to worry about ‘regrowth‘ with this treatment, (unlike permanent hair straightening, which gives you curly roots and straight ends as it grows back). The treatment actually changes the natural structure of your hair from curly/frizzy to straight and straightens/softens curls over time.

Remember:

  • Be sure to wait for at least 3 hours for the treatment to really settle into your hair (why not leave it the whole day just to be sure?).
  • Make sure you ask your salon if the keratin treatment they use is low in formaldehyde. This is very important.
  • If you colour your hair, leave about 2 weeks between keratin and colouring.
